So as far as we are concerned, it's replace them all or please go away. Reason: The set will not be reliable if this is not done, and when it invariably fails, it will be us (as in "you fixed this last week and it doesn't work again, you did a c**p repair" type complaint) that gets the bad reputation, not them. If they don't agree they are quite welcome to take it elsewhere. If we get in any pre-2000 Uniden chassis for repair, we now insist on replacing all the 10V electros BEFORE doing any other repairs. If you can't get one for the Zachary T you can use one for the Cobra 29 GTL. Measuring voltages only tells you if you have an open or a short. Test the 10 volt and any 6.3 ufd caps first. If a cap is bad it may read anywhere from a short to a few thousand ohms, in which case it is bad. Once a cap charges up you should read infinity or at least a few million ohms of resistance. If you key up and there is an increase in current, then the radio is going into transmit and may be transmitting.Īnother test you can do with the radio unplugged and OFF is use an ohm meter across every electrolytic capacitor in the transmit circuitry. Also, if you can measure the current when you key up it would be a big help. I don't know what equipment you have available to make tests, but another radio next to the Zach is a good start.
A scrap 29 LTD is a good source for parts for your Zachary T. The newer or later version is the same as a Cobra 29 LTD, but the parts are laid out differently, and the board numbers are not the same, but the operation, and even most of the parts are interchangeable. The older version uses a relay and an 858 PLL. I am assuming you have the newer version of the radio.
The radio is not out lock if the Tx indicator turns Red, so the transmitter must be working at some level. Do you have a radio you can place near the Zachary T? If you key up and get any signal on the test radio, then the radio is transmitting but is not being amplified. If the radio sat unused for a while it is possible that an electrolytic capacitor has dried out and may show resistance or even a short.
